Getting out on the course and enjoying a nice day with some friends is a lot of fun. Whether you’re a devoted golfer, a novice or somewhere in the middle, you’ve probably either experienced some lower back pain or heard of a fellow golfer with a back injury. Dr Jonathan Clarke D.C., Doctor of Chiropractic and Clinic Director at Saltash Chiropractic Clinic is a golf novice who knows firsthand the benefits chiropractic can have on your game.

Linking Golf & Chiropractic

To Dr. Clarke, the link between golf and chiropractic is clear, “Chiropractic care allows a body to function at its optimal level,” he says. “Golf requires tremendous coordination between different parts of the body, involving numerous muscles. This level of coordination is at its best when our bodies are able to function optimally.” Dr. Clarke isn’t the only one who feels this way; many top pros regularly receive chiropractic care during the golf season, including Tiger Woods, Padraig Harrington and Jim Furyk. Woods is a huge supporter of regular adjustments and considers his care plan to be absolutely essential to his game. In a widely circulated quote, Woods explains why: “I’ve been going to a chiropractor for as long as I can remember, it is as important as the practice of my swing.” Most Common Injury

Back Injuries are the most Common Injury in Golf

According to a Dynamic Chiropractor article, Dr. Tom LaFountain, Director of Chiropractic Services for the PGA Tour, reports that 80 percent of injuries suffered on the course are back injuries.

Dr. Clarke explains that golfers’ repetitive movements, like their swing or their putt, make them prone to muscle strains and repetitive use injuries. He highly recommends chiropractic for golf-related injury. “These injuries commonly affect the biomechanics of the spine, which is what chiropractors are especially qualified to treat,” explains Dr. Clarke.

Improvements on the Course

As in any sport, your skills can be impaired by injury or even aches and pains. Although a fair weather golfer, Dr. Clarke knows this as well as anyone. “It’s difficult to score your best when in pain or unable to swing properly,” he explains. “After chiropractic care, many patients have told me they experience better movement and can hit the ball straighter or farther.”

Get Ahead of the Game

Dr. Clarke stresses the importance of being proactive about your spinal health. “I recommend an evaluation of your spine and nervous system for everyone, even if you’re not currently experiencing any issues,” Dr. Clarke explains. “The reason is simple: we frequently don’t feel pain until a problem has been there for a prolonged time and has advanced.”

Take care of yourself on the course and off the course so you can keep your game in full swing all season long.
